Disclaimer and Editorial Policy
Last updated: 17 October 2026. This page explains what Bengali Movie Reviews & Box Office Collections (BMR) publishes, how we do it, and the legal basis we work on. It is not legal advice.
What BMR is
BMR is an independent Bengali film news and review publication. We collect published critic reviews of Bengali films, summarise each one in our own words, link to the original, and combine the ratings into one score. We also report box office figures and publish our own articles and analysis.
How we treat other people’s reviews
- Summaries, not copies. Each review appears as a short summary written by BMR, with the critic’s name, the publication and a link to the full review. We do not reproduce reviews in full.
- Published ratings. When a critic prints a star rating, including in a rating graphic, we use that rating and say where it came from.
- BMR estimates. When a review has no star rating, we read the whole review and estimate the rating its words add up to, using the same scale for every film. Every estimate is labelled “BMR estimate”, explains its reason under “Why this score?”, and counts for less than a published rating. An estimate is BMR’s opinion, not the critic’s.
- Every critic counts the same. No critic, publication, producer or star can buy a higher score, and no rating is changed for payment. Sponsored content and advertisements are always labelled.
- Corrections. If you are the critic and think a summary or estimate is wrong, write to us and we will correct it or remove it, usually within a day. If you send your own rating, we use yours.
Reviews that are later removed
Sometimes a reviewer removes a review after publishing it. Where that happens because of a notice, a complaint or a court order, we say so on the film’s page in neutral terms, keep the rating and summary as they were originally published where we recorded them, and do not speculate about who sent the notice. Readers should know that when critical reviews are taken down, the reviews still available may not reflect the full range of opinion.
Box office figures
Box office numbers are reported from publicly available trade sources, chiefly Sacnilk, and labelled as India net or gross. They are estimates published by those sources, not official figures from producers, and may be revised. Hit or flop verdicts are marked as estimates unless confirmed.
The legal basis we work on
We believe our work is lawful under Indian law for the reasons below. We link to the texts so you can check them yourself.
- Freedom of speech and expression. Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution of India protects the freedom of speech and expression, which includes the freedom of the press and the right to publish opinion and criticism, subject only to the reasonable restrictions in Article 19(2).
- Criticism of a public performance is not defamation. Section 356 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (formerly Section 499 IPC), Sixth Exception: it is not defamation to express in good faith any opinion respecting the merits of any performance which its author has submitted to the judgment of the public. A film released in cinemas is such a performance. Our reviews and summaries discuss the film, not anyone’s private life. (BNS Section 356 text)
- Fair dealing for criticism, review and news. Section 52(1)(a) of the Copyright Act, 1957 allows fair dealing with a work for the purposes of criticism or review, and for reporting current events and affairs. Our short summaries, posters used to identify a film, and links to original reviews are used for these purposes. (Section 52 text)
- Digital news publisher standards. We follow the Code of Ethics for digital news publishers in Part III of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, including the Norms of Journalistic Conduct of the Press Council of India, and we run the grievance process described below.
- Comments and reader reviews. Reader comments and ratings are the views of the readers who post them. We moderate them and remove unlawful content when we are made aware of it.
None of this means we cannot make mistakes. If we get something wrong, we will correct it openly.
Grievances, corrections and takedown requests
Anyone with a complaint about something we published can contact our Grievance Officer through the contact page (choose “Grievance”). Tell us the page, what you believe is wrong and why. We acknowledge every grievance within 24 hours and decide it within 15 days. Legal notices should be sent the same way; we review each one in good faith and with legal advice where needed.
